Coal Harbour in downtown Vancouver, between expansive Stanley Park and Canada Place Pier, has had a considerable growth especially since the 1990s.
It is situated along a picturesque waterfront lined with mountains, marinas, and floating walkways, but Coal Harbour is technically bounded by Burrard Street to the southeast, West Georgia and Pender Streets to the southwest, and the park to the northwest.
The neighborhood got its name when coal was found in the area in 1859. So, for a long time, Coal Harbour was mostly an industrial area, home to shipyards, a Boeing seaplane plant and a lumber mill.
But in the 1980s, railroads helped the industrial sites connect with the rest of Canada and in 1985, things started to change even more when Canada Place was constructed and with the redevelopment of its surroundings.
In 1990, the city of Vancouver came up with a development plan outlining its goal to transform the industrial area into a residential waterfront neighborhood. Coal Harbour, which until recently contained only rail yards, was gradually considered a residential area and blossomed into a neighborhood of extra modern apartment towers, mini parks, restaurants and retail shops.
One of the conditions for developers was to create 2.75 acres (approx. 1ha) of park for every 1,000 people. Thanks to the city's development policies, from 1995 on, new residential high-rises emerged and in less than 15 years, a whole new neighborhood was born.
But development has not stopped and with the fast growth currently taking place, in the near future there will be more schools, community centers, major performing arts facilities and, of course, more apartment towers.
Coal Harbour accommodates people from around the world and it simply offers a diversity of lifestyles. Residents of this planned community can enjoy a peaceful yet exciting life of boating, biking and strolling along the seawall, as well as the vibes of downtown.
